When did movie trailers start and how did they advertise before them?

  1. The first trailer shown in a movie theatre was in 1913 - a short filmto promote a stage musical. The medium quickly caught on, mainly with short comedies like Chaplin's. From then until the late 50, trailers consisted in showing a few key scenes of a film (long scenes, not just quick cuts like today's trailers) with instrumental music from the film (trailers today are usually scored to music not even present in the film itself) and usually narrated (or even hosted by) a character from the film introducing the story and its key players. Here are two great examples: 1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRSCV2qc2IY 2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyv19bg0scg By the mid 60s, Trailers evolved to quick cuts sequences with provocative narration to resdemble what they are today. Here's a brief (and easy to read) history of movie trailer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_trailer Hope it helps!
