Is it legal to download movie trailers and upload them on your own YouTube channel?

I would like to make a video with a movie trailer and post it on Youtube but is it legal?

  1. no
  2. well idk if it's legal or not, but if the company that you are taking the movie trailer from sees their trailer on youtube, then they will force you to remove the video, so yeah, i guess it's illegal.
  3. yes it's illegal, and if the company really thought you cost them money, they can actually sue. It's "copyright infringement" and you don't own the trailer. My old account got suspended that way, and i had about 2 million views too :( ( i posted concert videos and kanye west's team took down everything i had from 2 years )
  4. No No No No No No No No No No No No ! You can get ur account deleted! Don't try it!
  5. Yes, if found you could be convicted to federal prison for no more than 5 years and/or fined amounts up to $100000.
  6. Generally, as a rule, it's not legal to post someone else's copyrighted material on the internet without their explicit permission. That's not to say it doesn't happen. It happens a lot. But it's still usually not legal. Because of the prevalence of such acts, the typical response by the content owner (the person or company who owns the rights to that trailer) will probably be to issue a DMCA takedown notice to YouTube, at which point they will remove the video. That's normally all that happens. However, if you're really looking to make some sort of statement (I'm not sure why, but you don't make your motives clear), then you might be able to argue that what you're doing qualifies as Fair Use. Fair Use is a pretty complicated part of copyright law and you should probably consult with a lawyer (I'm not a lawyer, so you should probably ignore everything I say except the part where I say talk to a real lawyer). Stanford University also offers an extensive guide to Fair Use that you can check out here: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/ But, if I'm guessing right, you just want to post something you found so your friends can see it. I suggest just sending them a link. It's less likely to land you in legal limbo. Good Luck!
  7. Trailers are owned by the studios and are copyrighted just like music.
  8. I just used a Star Trek commercial...but I got it for a music video, and I altered it my way or that of course. Just like using movie scenes. I wouldn't recommend downloading another youtube video if ur not going to change it though. Even if u give the uploader credit, it's extremely retarded to upload the same exact thing that is already there. And in some cases vids liek that get comments saying so and low ratings, I know someone that does that and they don't get good feedback. lol If ur getting it for something ur gonna mix with it, then go for it...the nice thing is, commercials are something u can feel safe with uploading, because they have the scenes that won't be copyrighted unlike with the movie perhaps. ;)
  9. i dont know y all have rated the answers thumbs down thou wat they said is rite... yes it is ILLEGAL to do that so i dont think u shud... u mite get into trouble but still if u wanna risk it then u r asking for it dude...
